About the project
Kingsford Smith Drive is a major Brisbane arterial road linking the CBD to the Airport, Port of Brisbane and other key precincts. Brisbane City Council has committed to a $650 million dollar improvement project that will see significant road widening and better public transport options brought to the area. This, along with better pedestrian paths and cycleways, will deliver considerable improvement to one of Brisbane’s most important traffic corridors.
The road will be widened from four to six lanes between Eagle Farm and Hamilton, as well as improvement works being undertaken between Cooksley Street and Breakfast Creek Road in Albion.
Lend Lease is delivering this project and construction is well underway, with the upgrade due to be completed in the second half of 2020.
The challenges
The LendLease team needed a local Brisbane-based hire partner who could supply high-quality excavators and loaders, as well as a large number of crash rated road barriers.
Both concrete and water filled barriers were required along with small and large excavators, posi-track loaders and a number of road plates. Powered equipment needed to be reliable and well maintained, so the contractor looked to Orange Hire due to our reputation for great service and our low-hour fleet.

Orange Hire has so far supplied the site with multiple excavators ranging from 5.5tonne to 22tonne, posi tracks, road plates in a range of sizes, concrete crash barriers fitted with anti-gawk screens, and water filled barriers. Our Brisbane depot is conveniently located nearby at Pinkenba, making coordinating delivery of equipment a breeze for this project.
Orange Hire’s professional and highly trained team was able to safely deliver the necessary large equipment plus over three kilometres of concrete crash barriers, on time and without hassles.
