A crash cushion mitigates the effects of the impact by absorbing kinetic energy to protect nearby buildings, vehicles, drivers, and road workers in the event of a collision. Crash cushions are common roadside sightings since they are put in front of various immovable structures including flyover supports, jersey barrier endpoints, and gore points to prevent vehicles from crashing into them and help reduce head on collisions of errant vehicles.

Crash cushions often make use of gating systems to let a crashing vehicle into a clear zone, which allows it to decelerate without hitting any obstructions.

Orange Hire’s Absorb 350 Barrier End Treatment Hire – the Absorb 350 is a water filled non-directive, gating crash cushion that is approved to scale crash testing NCHRP Test Level 2 (70km/h) and Test Level 3 (100km/h).

The Absorb 350 gating system is often utilised on civil and construction work zones, exits, wide medians, edge of road locations and any site where it is desirable for the post impact trajectories to be on the back side of the system.

The benefits of this well-designed gating system include a narrow footprint, no foundations required, rapid deployment and speed rating flexibility. The nine element system is approved for NCHRP 350 Test Level 3 (100km/h) and the five element system is approved to NCHRP 350 Test Level 2 (70km/h).

The nine element system length is 9700mm and the five element 5700mm, with each empty cartridge weighing only 50kg, and once filled weighing 315kg per cartridge (taking approx. 265 litres per cartridge to fill).

The ability to attach the Absorb 350 to permanent or temporary crash barriers without anchoring the system to the roadway surface makes it a logical choice when considering hiring a barrier end treatment.
