Case Study: Barriers for Mulgoa Road & Railway Bridge Upgrade

Time period: Completed in 2021

Location: Penrith NSW

Long term barrier hire, including:

  • Deltabloc concrete barriers
  • Armorzone water filled barriers

Project snapshot

The Australian and NSW governments jointly funded the $105 million upgrade to this major Western Sydney intersection, helping to better connect road users to the Penrith CBD and ease traffic in the area.

With heavy congestion during morning and afternoon peak times, this intersection needed to be upgraded in line with strong residential and commercial growth in the heart of Penrith, which would lead to a greater traffic load in the coming years.

Running from Union Road to Museum Drive in Penrith, the project includes an upgrade to the ageing Railway Bridge and widening of the existing rail underpass to allow 3 lanes in each direction.

The challenges

This complex project involved working in a narrow road corridor in an extremely busy area.

By far the most challenging part of this project was installing the new railway bridge, as the span of the existing one would not stretch across the newly installed lanes. To overcome this, the new bridge was built nearby on site and moved into place in one night using a massive bridge lifting machine known as an SPMT (or self-propelled modular transporter).

This fascinating process can be seen in the time-lapse footage below:

Throughout this long term project, the contractors needed to ensure that motorists, workers and pedestrians were kept safe, and so a variety of different road barriers were required to line the road and for use within the worksite.

With the project first kicking off in 2019, the contractor needed a barrier hire partner who could offer a competitive rate and safe, effective plastic and concrete barriers.

Our solution

The Orange Hire team were able to provide long term barrier hire with a mix of Deltabloc concrete barriers and Armorzone water filled barriers.

Deltabloc jersey barriers

The Delabloc jersey barrier is MASH Tested to TL-3 and approved for use by Austroads for use on roads up to 100km/hr in NSW and VIC. It is also approved for use in all other states (rated for 80km/hr zones in QLD).

With a TL-3 MASH rating, the barriers have a low deflection of just 1.44 metres under TL-3 test conditions. Available in 2m, 4m & 6m barrier lengths, they can also be supplied with 4m end tapers and Absorb 350 crash cushions.

Waterfilled barriers

Armorzone water filled barriers are just one of the plastic site barriers available from Orange Hire.

These are ideal for work zone protection and moderate traffic speed areas. Weighing only 50kg when empty, they provide a strong and robust barrier when filled with water, preventing vehicles from coming into contact with workers.
