About the Project

NSW RMS awarded CPB Contractors the contract for The Northern Road Upgrade Stage 5 & 6. This $300M project is expected to be delivered by 2022, doubling a 13km section of one of Western Sydney’s busiest arterial roads.

Stretching from Glenmore Park to Luddenham, The Northern Road upgrade project will upgrade road infrastructure to a divided four-lane alignment and create public transport lanes, ultimately creating transport links with the new Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek.

The wide scope of works is designed to increase road capacity, reduce congestion and travel times, and support the region’s growing population.

Key Challenges

The extensive works package issued to CPB Contractors includes general earthworks, stormwater drainage, pavement construction, pedestrian access as well as street lighting, ITS works, property adjustments and landscaping.

For the duration of the project, heavy traffic along the route would need to be managed safely whilst adjacent works took place in the road corridor. The project managers sought a local hire partner who could provide powered equipment and road barriers, as well as a range of other ancillary equipment. Continuity of supply was critical, as was a spotless safety record.

Orange Hire’s Solution

Orange Hire has been the specialist hire company of choice for CPB Contractors, supplying a range of equipment since the project first broke ground in 2016. Orange Hire has secured a number of key packages on this project including the supply of 10,000m of MASH tested concrete road barriers.

Additionally, Orange Hire secured the compaction requirement on the project, supplying over 20 rollers to the project thus far. Our fleet includes machines from reputable manufacturers such as Dynapac, Sany, Wacker Neuson, Caterpillar, Ammann and more, ranging from 2.6 up to 18 tonnes. Orange Hire also supplied compactors from our fleet of plate and upright style units.

The addition of lighting towers, road plates and plastic barriers round out the hire component, along with heavy duty steel road plates. These are ideal for covering road excavations and come complete with a centre lifting point meaning there is no need for plate grabs, making them simple to move. Likewise, our plastic barriers are lightweight when empty, yet when full provide a strong and reliable barricade, giving protection to crews on site.
