Case Study: Reliable Protection for Melbourne’s AAMI Park Stadium

Project: Security Measures for AAMI Park Stadium

TIME PERIOD:  2017 – Ongoing

EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED:

  • 450m of Deltabloc crash rated concrete barriers fitted with 8 x 60km Arbsorb350 end terminals
  • 320m of Armorzone water-filled barriers

About the project:

AAMI Park Stadium is one of Melbourne’s premier sporting and event locations and is unique in that it is Melbourne’s only rectangular stadium. The home ground for the Melbourne Storm rugby league team, Melbourne Rebels (rugby union), Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City (soccer), it is also the administrative and training home to the Melbourne AFL club.

Often used for other events and concerts, the stadium is heavily used for different functions throughout the year. During 2019 the venue attracted 664,000 patrons across 56 events.

Due to being heavily patronised and with a number of events on the calendar that would likely attract substantial crowds, the operations team in conjunction with Melbourne City Council were looking to increase security around the area.

Key challenges:

A series of counterterrorism strategies had been introduced by Council and the stadium was identified as a potential target.

With the scope for very large gatherings close to Melbourne’s CBD, anti-terrorism contingency measures were put in place which highlighted the need for heavyweight barricades around the perimeter of the venue.

Concrete jersey barriers presented an ideal solution, as they could be positioned in place easily, did not require permanent fixing to the ground, and were rigid enough to provide reliable breakthrough protection against motor vehicle accidents and the threat of intentional ramming.

Our solution:

Working in partnership with Citywide Services and Melbourne City Council, Orange Hire was able to supply and install our 6m long DB80 Concrete Jersey Barriers as an added security measure around the precinct.

The barriers were initially installed in August of 2017 as part of anti-terrorism measures put in place by Melbourne City Council. The installation was conducted at night by the Orange Hire installation team using a 25t Franna crane, electrical spotter, riggers and an accredited transport provider.

These rugged concrete crash barriers are designed to for pedestrian shared areas and malls to prevent cars from inadvertently coming into contact with people. The barriers are MASH TL-3 rated to provide impact protection from vehicles travelling up to 100km/hr in Victoria and are also approved for use by other state road authorities and by Austroads.

In October of 2019 Orange Hire was contracted by a Tier 2 civil contractor to provide additional DB80 concrete barriers, anti-debris screens and Absorb 350 safety end terminals, all of which are VicRoads approved.

These additional barriers were installed as temporary site protection from motor vehicles whilst permanent security measures were installed by the Tier 2 civil contractor.

The Deltabloc precast concrete barrier guarantees reliable breakthrough prevention for heavy vehicles when installed in a specified length, making it also ideal for road work and construction applications in the road corridor.

Using a simple ‘dog-bone’ style coupling system, the barriers can be linked together to form long runs of fencing or used individually as seen here to provide ramming protection and additional security for key venues, public places, government buildings and more.

The recent installation was managed by Orange Hire and once again undertaken at night. These additional DB80 concrete barriers were also supplied with 320 metres of VicRoads approved plastic Armorzone barriers.

Orange Hire is still currently working with Citywide Services and Melbourne City council in providing additional security around the precinct to ensure the general public is safe.
