About the project:

Canberra Metro Construction is a joint venture between John Holland and CPB Contractors, tasked with delivering the iconic Canberra Metro Light Rail project. The design and construct contract was awarded to the joint venture in 2016, with Stage 1 set to revamp transport links between key residential and business sectors of Canberra.

A 12 kilometre public transport corridor will stretch from the Gungahlin Town Centre to the City along Flemington Road, Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue. This length of light rail includes 13 stops and boarding / disembarking areas which will integrate seamlessly with the existing bus network.

Stage 1 became operational in early 2019, connecting passengers from the northern area of Gungahlin to Canberra’s City centre. Stage 2 of the project is now underway, continuing the line from the city to Woden in the South.

Key challenges:

With much of the metro rail line utilising existing road corridors, contractors had to work close to a live traffic situation. Because of this, safety barriers were required to protect the team, along with crowd control barriers which were used to create safe walkways around site.

Excavation work included the installation of services and cables in and around the existing road network, which meant that road plates were needed to ensure safe travel for motorists whilst construction was taking place.

And naturally, the installation of the 12 kilometre long rail line involved significant excavations, presenting a requirement for a range of different excavators.

Orange Hire’s solution:

Orange hire forged a partnership with Canberra Metro Construction in the delivery of the Canberra Metro Light Rail. By safely and professionally supplying a range of excavators, barriers and associated equipment, our team was able to meet the exacting requirements of the contractor and help to ensure the project remained on schedule.

Orange Hire supplied in excess of 6 kilometres of DB80 precast concrete crash barriers which were used as perimeter fencing in between the busy arterial roads and the construction site. Our team also supplied road plates, track mats, temporary fencing, a large number of crowd control barriers, as well as a variety of earthmoving plant.
