Orange Hire Partners with Cross River Rail

TIME PERIOD: Ongoing

About the Project:

The Cross River Rail is a new 10km rail line stretching from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes nearly 6km of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and its CBD. The project includes the construction of four new underground stations plus upgrades to eight existing stations.

By unlocking the bottleneck at the core of Brisbane’s transport network, the Cross River Rail will allow more trains to run more often, enabling a reliable turn-up-and-go transport system for South East Queensland.

Key Challenges:

Early works for the project began back in August 2017, including geotechnical drilling, subsurface work on utilities, demolition works, and the construction of a temporary coach terminal at Roma Street.

Major contractors began construction works for the project in late 2019 and now have major worksites established at Woolloongabba, Boggo Road, Albert Street, Roma Street and RNA Showgrounds. There are also rail works in the project’s northern and southern rail corridors. The project is expected to have active worksites established at 18 locations by the end of 2020, and be fully operational by 2024.

With diverse work taking place concurrently across several sites, a number of the contractors involved looked to Orange Hire as an equipment partner for the life of the project.

Orange Hire’s Solution:

Orange Hire has been instrumental in the early works and main package of this flagship project, supplying over 30 pieces of equipment for a number of different applications.

This includes upwards of 20 excavators with hammers and shear attachments which have been used throughout the project, with key contractors trusting Orange Hire to supply equipment to the Cross River Rail’s exacting specifications.

Most recently, Orange Hire supplied a 23t compact radius excavator with shear attachment, multi grapple bucket and breaker, with a list of extras that needed immediate attention.

This included multiple items being ordered and fitted to spec, including fitting additional auxiliary piping to run the rotation on the shears, setting up the shear by adjusting and testing the blades, and setting up a range of other attachments in a similar fashion.

The contractor also required our team to order and install operator protective guards suitable for a demolition environment, fit various small items to meet the spec, and complete a plant checklist. Once complete, this machine needed to be inspected and approved before being delivered to site.

Customising, preparing and testing machines to suit the job is all in a day’s work for Orange Hire, however for this particular order, we worked within a tight time frame and were able to successfully have the machine on site and ready for work within just 48 hours.

Orange hire has a huge range of earthmoving equipment and attachments in our fleet, with machines conveniently located around the country.
