A Complete Hire Solution for Parramatta Light Rail

Project: Hire Equipment for Parramatta Light Rail

TIME PERIOD: Ongoing

EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED:

  • Excavators ranging from 5.5 to 13 tonne
  • Concrete barriers
  • Water filled barriers
  • Temporary fencing
  • Steel plates

About the project:

Designed to be operational by 2023, Parramatta Light Rail will prepare Western Sydney for strong growth in the coming years. With an estimated 130,000 people living within walking distance of Parramatta Light Rail stops by 2026, the project cements Parramatta as Sydney’s second CBD.

The NSW Government has invested $2.4B into the project, ultimately connecting Parramatta, Westmead, Carlingford and Camellia with 16 stops along a 12 kilometre long route.

Stage 1 is being delivered primarily by Downer and CPB Contractors in a joint venture known as Parramatta Connect. Diona and Ward Civil took care of the early works package, supporting construction by relocating utilities, road widening and developing more parking in the Parramatta area.

Key challenges:

With construction taking place in busy, congested areas, any suppliers involved would need to guarantee absolute safety and timely delivery, as well as ongoing support during this long term project.

The extensive work cuts through the centre of Parramatta’s heavily developed CBD and through surrounding residential and commercial areas. Access in busy traffic corridors, through pedestrian malls and alongside existing roads needed to be established so that work could take place safely without undue risk to staff on site.

The contractors needed a hire partner that could deliver safety barriers and fencing to secure the site and create a safe work zone, and that could also provide reliable earthmoving equipment for a range of different purposes.

Our solution:

Orange Hire has been involved in the Parramatta Light Rail project from the outset, first as the primary supplier to Diona and Ward Civil’s early works, and now continuing with Parramatta Connect (CPB Downer JV).

Multiple excavators ranging from 5.5 tonne to 13 tonne were delivered on time and on budget, and with Orange Hire’s fleet having an average age of just 2 years, construction teams could rest assured that the equipment would perform under pressure without breakdown or failure.

Orange Hire has also supplied steel road plates, safety fencing, water filled barriers and concrete crash barriers for a number of years, including over 2.5 km of concrete crash barriers which are being used to create a safe work zone for construction teams.
