Which‌ ‌crash barriers‌ ‌are‌ ‌approved‌ ‌in‌ ‌Queensland?‌ ‌

Approved temporary crash barriers for roadwork and on-site use

Here’s a simple guide to the different types of barriers available for hire for your next civil construction project. We carry a large number of barriers in our Brisbane and Toowoomba yards, ready to roll out to your project.

But how do you know which barrier is best for your job?

Let’s take a look at the barriers commonly used by our customers on civil, infrastructure and roadwork projects.

Barriers can be broken into crash rated and non-crash rated types.

Crash rated barriers are typically used wherever vehicles are passing close to the worksite, for example, larger roadwork projects involving a closed lane, or expanding a motorway to include additional lanes.

Non-crash rated barriers are recommended for pedestrian delineation, marking out car parking on a worksite, and other applications where vehicles are travelling at very slow speeds.

Barriers also come in different materials including concrete and plastic. Here’s a rundown of the most commonly used barriers.

Deltabloc DB80 Concrete jersey barriers

Concrete jersey barriers for hire

The DB80 is a steel-reinforced temporary concrete barrier used widely across Queensland for roadwork, civil and infrastructure projects.

The DB80 precast Type F barrier is MASH tested and Department of Transport & Main Roads Approved for use on state-controlled roads in Queensland with a speed limit of 80km/hr or less.

Available for dry hire in either 2, 4 or 6 metre long barriers, each tough precast concrete barrier has a steel tension bar running through the middle. Easy to couple together, the barriers can be anchored at the ends but require no intermediate ground attachment. This design means the DB80 precast concrete barrier meets the criteria laid out by the QLD Department of Transport & Main Roads.

These barriers are easy to transport and install on your job site, and their classic bottom-heavy shape keeps the barriers weighed down to allow fast truck-mounted installation.

Plastic water filled barriers

Lo-Ro cable barriers

Lo-Ro MASH water barriers for hire

The Lo-Ro is relatively new to the Australian market but already has approval across most State road authorities including QLD TMR. Suitable for posted speed zones of up to 70km/hr, the Lo-Ro is easy to transport, easy to fill and easy to link together.

MASH Tested to TL-1 and TL-2, it provides shorter clear zones without compromising on safety. This means you may not have to leave as much space between the barrier and the perimeter of your worksite, making it ideal for sites with limited access.

It is designed for applications where low deflection is critical, and the shorter minimum length means you don’t need as many barriers linked together in a row to be compliant (compared to some other models).

Lo-Ro waterfilled barrier specifications

  • Model: Lo-Ro plastic barrier
  • MASH Test Level: TL-1 and TL-2
  • Approved for use on QLD roads: yes, in a minimum length of 48m not including terminals
  • Weighs just 72kg when empty
  • Weighs 726kg when full of water

Armorzone barriers for hire

Armorzone water filled barrier

The Armorzone is a very popular waterfilled crash barrier. Providing reliable work zone protection, it is a 2m long unit that has a capacity of 560L of water.

Due to its design and steel pin connectors, the barrier can be set up straight or curved with a radius as small as 28 metres if necessary. This makes it ideal for positioning around curves in roadside or median applications.

Armorzone barrier specs

  • Model: Armorzone
  • NCHRP350 Test Level: TL-1
  • Approved for use on QLD roads: yes
  • Weighs just 50kg when empty
  • Fill with 560L of water

Non-crash rated worksite barriers

In some instances, a crash rated barrier is over-engineered for your needs.

Orange Hire Plastic Delineator Barrier

If you’re simply using a water filled barrier to direct pedestrians, create walkways on site or using barriers in a very low-speed zone like a car park, a non-crash rated barrier could be sufficient.

There are many models available that are made from lightweight polyethylene, making them ideal for moving around sites easily as conditions change. Typically around 2 metres long, these barriers have moulded plastic pins that make them easy to link together.

When in place, the barriers are filled with water to make an excellent barrier for pedestrian delineation, cordoning off no-go zones, surrounding drop-offs and blocking off pits on work sites.
