What safety means to me: Lachlan Hill

Lachlan Hill, Plant Mechanic at Orange Hire Newcastle

Continuing with our series of staff interviews, we chat to Newcastle Plant Mechanic, Lachlan, about how Orange Hire fosters a safe and supportive work environment.

What kind of things does Orange Hire encourage, celebrate and acknowledge to ensure everyone has a focus on safety?

We try and make sure safety is at the forefront of our minds. Every day we discuss hazards before we start work, every meeting is started with a safety message, and every suggestion for improvement is welcomed.

Why is safety important to you from a personal perspective?

Returning home the same way I arrive each day – without injury – is important both for me and the people I care about.

Can you think of a time when a safety procedure has prevented a potential injury?

Using forklift exclusion zone areas – there is always a potential for injury when this method is not in place.

Do you think the hire industry overall is pretty safe, or does it have a way to go?

As technology improves and processes change, our safety process will also need to evolve. Until our industry is free from death and injury there will always be work to be done.

Are there systems in place to keep developing a safety mindset within the team?

Definitely – we’ve got a range of different procedures and processes in place including regular internal and external training, daily toolbox talks, and branch safety inspections.

How does Orange Hire’s safety culture compare to previous jobs you have worked in?

Top-notch! Orange Hire’s approach is a class above.

How does Orange Hire support staff safety in other areas, such as mental health?

We receive regular wellness newsletters, and all love getting involved in fundraising for mental health and other important causes, such as Movember, Dry July, and Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. We’ve also got an employee assistance program in place for any team members to access if they ever need extra support.
