Case Study: Mainland Civil – Manly Foreshore Apartment Development

The Challenge:

Delivering large-scale earthworks and structural foundations for a construction site in a high-traffic foreshore location presents a unique set of challenges. Mainland Civil was engaged to execute bulk and detailed earthworks and civil engineering, capping beam concrete structures, and anchoring for a new apartment complex at the corner of Wentworth St and South Steyne in Manly.

This project involved the removal of volumes of up to 20,000m³ of VENM (Virgin Excavated Natural Material, the establishment of piling platforms, cross sections, shot anchoring, and the installation of capping beams, all while working within a constrained site footprint with intricate high voltage electrical works nearby. This meant that perfect safety compliance and planning were critical for success on this construction project. Additionally, 5,000m³ of sandstone and DGB road base were imported to prepare for concrete slab pours. Given the high pedestrian activity and tight site access, transport and logistics had to be meticulously managed to minimise disruption to local traffic and residents.

The Solution:

United Rentals (previously Orange Hire) provided Mainland Civil with a tailored earthworks equipment solution to efficiently execute their scope of work while adhering to strict compliance requirements. Our fleet supply included:

With strict compliance regulations around dust and noise pollution, United Rentals worked closely with Mainland Civil to ensure all equipment was delivered and operated within environmental guidelines. Given the limited site access, all equipment transport was carefully scheduled outside of peak hours with pilot vehicle support, ensuring minimal disruption to the local environment and community.

The Result:

United Rentals’ strategic approach to equipment supply and logistics enabled Mainland Civil to execute their work efficiently within the project’s challenging conditions. Our ability to deliver and support a bulk earthworks  fleet tailored to the site’s footprint, compliance requirements, and operational needs helped keep the project on track while maintaining safety and minimising community impact.

As the project nears completion, United Rentals continues to support Mainland Civil’s pipeline of work, with further machine supply planned for their upcoming projects.
